Statement Of Need

Philadelphia faces one of the highest child hunger rates in the nation. According to Feeding America, more than one in four children in the city experience food insecurity —lacking reliable access to the nutritious meals essential for healthy growth, academic success, and emotional stability. The problem is especially acute in low-income neighborhoods throughout South, West, and North Philadelphia, where food deserts and limited transportation isolate families from affordable, healthy options.

However, the current demand far exceeds capacity. Without a permanent vending location, Ándale On Wheels must rely on temporary permits and unpredictable fundraising to fund operations. To address this gap, we seek support to secure a permanent vending site near Temple University — a high-traffic area that would generate consistent earned income to directly fund free meal distribution.

Ándale On Wheels, Philadelphia’s first nonprofit food truck, was founded to confront this crisis through innovation and compassion. By reinvesting 100% of food sales into feeding programs, we transform a self-sustaining business model into a hunger-relief mission. Each week, the program delivers 45–75 hot, nutritious meals to children at Police Athletic League (PAL) centers—safe environments that foster mentorship, recreation, and community.

Investing in Ándale On Wheels is an investment in both innovation and humanity: a proven, scalable model that replaces charity with empowerment and ensures that no child in Philadelphia goes hungry.

Ándale On Wheels was built on the belief that community impact must be sustainable, not seasonal. Our model merges business innovation with social purpose — using food sales to fund free meals for children in need — ensuring that our mission can thrive long after initial grants are spent.

By securing a permanent vending location near Temple University, Ándale On Wheels will generate steady, predictable revenue from daily food sales. A minimum of 50% of this earned income will directly fund free meal distribution at Police Athletic League (PAL) centers and other community sites. This approach significantly reduces dependence on grants and donations, making operations resilient to funding fluctuations.

We will strengthen partnerships with local schools, universities, and small businesses to secure donated ingredients, volunteer support, and shared kitchen facilities. Temple University’s student community and PAL’s citywide network offer a strong foundation for continued collaboration and resource sharing.

In addition to food sales, Ándale On Wheels will pursue:

  1. Corporate Sponsorships: Engaging socially responsible companies seeking visible community partnerships.
  2. Recurring Donor Campaigns: Encouraging individual supporters to sponsor monthly meals.
  3. Grant Renewals and New Funders: Targeting local foundations, hunger relief initiatives, and city programs aligned with food security and youth development.

Our goal is not only to sustain Ándale On Wheels but to inspire replication. The program’s model — combining entrepreneurial revenue with nonprofit purpose — is intentionally designed to be scalable. We aim to document our framework, mentor future partners, and help launch similar efforts across other Philadelphia neighborhoods and cities facing child hunger.

Within three years, Ándale On Wheels aims to operate multiple food trucks or satellite kitchens, serving all PAL centers across Philadelphia. This expansion will solidify a citywide network of sustainable meal programs, each rooted in community, driven by purpose, and powered by a replicable economic engine.

  1. Community Perception: Conduct interviews and informal focus groups to gauge community awareness and support for Ándale On Wheels’ mission.

Progress reports will be compiled quarterly and shared with funders, partners, and stakeholders. Each report will include meal counts, revenue summaries, and narrative impact highlights. At year-end, Ándale On Wheels will produce an Annual Impact Report summarizing key achievements, financial performance, community outcomes, and plans for the next phase of expansion.

  1. By combining consistent data tracking with transparent communication, Ándale On Wheels will not only measure its success but continuously improve its model — demonstrating that hunger relief can be both compassionate and sustainable.
